Lower half of clamp is rotated into line by actuator – then bolts are inserted

Then ROV positions clamp around the flange before the bolts are tightened

Outline of Problem:

10 inch nominal bore compact flange on a water injection system found to be leaking badly

Design Pressure was 197 bar (2860 psi)

Defect was believed to be substantial

Of an area equivalent to that of a 30mm diameter hole

Water Depth was approx. 500m (1600 ft)

Too deep for divers – clamp had to be flown, installed and injected by a ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle)
