Furmanite sets up in Karratha

Furmanite Australia, the technical services company geared to helping operators maximise asset uptime, has established an office in Karratha, Western Australia, to serve the region’s growing activity across the oil and gas, mining and other industries.

The company has geared up an on-the-ground presence in the region, where its on-line and on-site services are seeing growing demand. This includes an office and workshop on the Burrup Peninsula (King Bay), equipment and locally-based Furmanite personnel. The new office replaces the company’s former office in the Port Headland which closed last year.

“Known particularly for its iron ore and now as the base for the North West Shelf venture, Karratha is an important centre of increasing activity in the mining and oil and gas sectors (on and offshore) in particular – areas in which we have extensive experience. As this develops, the need for our services – such as on-line pressure leak sealing, pipeline intervention, in-situ machining, Pressure Systems Integrity management, on-line valve testing and valve repair among others, all designed to help operators keep their assets operational and earning efficiently – is seeing corresponding growth,” Furmanite’s Western Australia regional operations manager Martin Hurst said.

Furmanite’s services can deliver significant time and cost savings whether at design and construction stage, or in on-going operational maintenance programmes, by enabling work to be carried out in-situ for an on-time start-up or to minimise downtime in planned outages, or on-line while operation continues to avoid costly unscheduled shutdown. Its multi-skilled technicians, all offering the full range of specialist Furmanite services, can offer valuable manning efficiencies – particularly useful in large construction projects or shutdowns, and offshore. Projects recently undertaken in the region have included assistance in a major shutdown (providing specialist machining services on site for high tolerance machining for critical plant, leak sealing, and Trevitest services), and assistance in commissioning the new Burrup Fertilizer plant. Having technicians based in Karratha also gives Furmanite the ability to mobilise quickly offshore to the North West Shelf Oil and gas facilities and inland to the Pilbara mine sites.

“The decision to have a permanent base in Karratha has been customer demand driven,” Hurst explained. “With an on-the-ground presence in the region we’re able to offer plant operators an even better, more efficient service to help them minimise downtime and keep their assets earning.”
