Nuclear bonding

CUSTOMER: British Energy Torness Nuclear Power Station Scotland

PROBLEM: A significant engineering challenge arose at Torness nuclear power station, which could have led to disruption in production or shutdown when damaged valves prevented standard isolation and replacement of large leaking bellows.

SOLUTION: Having worked with Torness and developed a good working relationship, the specialty services company Furmanite was asked to come up with a solution to the problem.

.The solution, a close-fitting bespoke encapsulation box, 2.7 metres in diameter was designed, manufactured and installed onto bellows fitted between two large valves which supply the main seawater cooling lines to the turbines.

OUTCOME: This was achieved within just days of the potential problem being identified, avoiding the need to shutdown or interrupt production.
