CUSTOMER: BP BRUCE PLATFORM

PROBLEM: The discovery of wave-induced damage to the conductor tube on the BP Bruce Platform, caused by repeated impact against the guides was causing resonance and stresses, a problem that couldn't be allowed to continue without some major consequences occurring.

SOLUTION:  The result was the successful design, manufacture and installation of the SmartShim™ resin-filled chocking slips in 14 slots between the 28-inch conductor tube and 30-inch guides below the wellhead at main deck level.  SmartShim™ holds the conductor firmly in place, but with enough 'give' to absorb the lateral loads. It also accommodates the vertical movement caused by temperature changes of the riser content and is abrasion-resistant. Being shaped to fit the conical guides, and cast in-situ, it fits the dimensions perfectly even where the tube isn't centred.

OUTCOME: The conductor tubes are protected against the lateral loads and vertical movement and SmartShim™ remains an effective long-term solution.
