Customer: ICI MM8 plant Billingham.
Problem: A routine de-lagging created a challenge for Furmanite as severe internal erosion caused by sulphuric acid had holed the outer shell and thinned the surrounding area.
Solution: The injection of a compound of Potassium Silicate that solidified on contact with sulphuric acid. The Furmanite team, working closely with ICI, drilled, filled and tapped a series of holes before seam welding a patch onto the damaged area. Finally more compound was injected into the void between the shell and the patch to create a successful seal.
Outcome: A successful seal was completed in an environment not previously thought possible, saving ICI further possible delays by extending shutdown and expensive replacement equipment.
